Raising the profile, by Julie White
20 June 2013
We are all very much looking forward to the summer and, in this industry especially, hoping the weather will give us a fighting chance to get out there and do what we do best.
I believe, at last, that the importance of construction is being recognised and as I have always said, if we can get our industry growing in the UK then the whole of the economy will feel the benefit.
I am doing my best, where I can, to raise the profile of construction and particularly our specialist sector of diamond drilling and concrete sawing.
That has been made easier with the support of fantastic trade publications covering our sector and also by the likes of Construction News which is really pushing the cause of SMEs.
Over recent weeks, I have tried to get the message out there through more mainstream media too such as the BBC’s Any Questions on Radio Four and with interviews in the Guardian and the Daily Telegraph. I’ve also been on the Daily Politics Show with Vince Cable to discuss apprentices (click here).
To me, it is vital that construction and all the specialisms that come with it remain at the forefront of the news because of the massive role we play in the economy.
I am also a big believer in celebrating excellence and was honoured to be shortlisted in the construction category of the First Woman Awards recently.
I would also like to say a huge well done to everyone else who was shortlisted or who won on the night, especially Jane Wernick who won the award for the Built Environment.
And we have to make sure we continue to raise the profile of our industry and our individual sectors within it and fight for its survival and growth. If we don’t, who else will?
Hopefully the weather will at least be on our side!
