Olympics – one year on, by Julie White

The sporting Olympic legacy is for others to ensure happens but, on that note, it would be a great shame if we didn’t make the most of the buzz and the energy the games brought to the UK.

I attended the opening and closing ceremonies and several of the events, such as football and diving, and I don’t think we will see the like of it ever again – we can’t let this opportunity slip.

From a construction point of view, we definitely have to make sure there is a legacy.

D-Drill was a contractor on the Olympic Stadium – working together with some fantastic construction companies from across the country.

And the result was absolutely amazing and the whole Olympic Park was a wonderful showcase for British construction.

For some time, construction in the UK has not had the recognition it deserved but this was our big advert to the rest of the world – and we passed the test with flying colours.

UK construction did not only deliver on time and on budget – they were stunning, stylish buildings too that showed off what we can do.

So for me, that has to be our Olympic legacy. Construction in this country has to build on the fantastic achievements last summer and make sure we become known as world leaders in our field.

That means when the Government takes part in trade visits overseas, they don’t just push manufacturing and engineering (which are very, very important), they also push our specialist construction expertise too.
