#LoveConstruction, by Julie White

When I told Peter Allen on Five Live that I thought diamond drilling was sexy, he couldn’t stop laughing.

I don’t know if he thought I was slightly bonkers but it was clear that he’d never really heard someone talk about their industry in that way – especially the rough end of construction.

But I mean it and the Love Construction campaign could have been designed for me because I absolutely do love it. I live and breathe it. So that is why I am right behind the campaign and can’t thank Rebecca Evans and Construction News enough for coming up with the idea.

For a long time, I thought I was possibly on my own and that maybe I should seek help because I didn’t think it was normal to have such a love for our industry!!

Over the past few months, I have been fortunate enough to be able to undertake several interviews – with local, regional, national and trade media.

Of course, it does bring a little bit of publicity my company’s way but the real reason I am trying to take up all the media opportunities offered to me is to promote our industry and to highlight some of the issues we face.

It’s meant, at times, I’ve had to answer questions about current affairs and politics that are way out of my comfort zone and after one recent media appearance I did wonder to myself why I was doing it.

But for every uncomfortable moment, there are many more occasions when I can make Peter Allen chuckle or get politicians agreeing with me. Those moments far outweigh the difficult times.

People always say I perform much better in the media when I am in that comfort zone and I am confident about the subject I am discussing.

That’s when I am talking about our fantastic industry and that’s because I love construction.
