Launch of IACDS Safe Use of Diamond Tools Guide

Drumroll… 🥁 we are pleased to announce the release of ‘Safe Use of Diamond Tools’ guide Association IACDS

Coordinated by the IACDS in collaboration with the Federation of European Producers of Abrasives (FEPA), this publication aims to promote knowledge and share experiences about the aforementioned topic.

To achieve this goal, the IACDS’s “Diamond tools and safety” working group has prepared plenty of educational material for new workers in the drilling and sawing industry.

As the Coordinator of the Guide, Ms Julie White, puts it: “In all, members pulled together in the same direction to achieve this great guide and a real worldwide subject goal”.

Since this guide has an international scope, it covers general questions and does not cover local rules and regulations.

As this publication is a technical guide, its online version is accessible only to members of the IACDS and premium subscribers of our website.

How honoured I was to be asked to the lead and Chair the educational document working group on ‘Safe Use of Diamond Tools’ as this is a subject which is my all-time favourite that I love to shout about in the UK media press ‘What is Diamond Drilling and Sawing All About’ and then to put the icing on the cake ‘How it Should be used Correctly and Safely’.

It was also a very special group of people that took part in the working group and I have to thank them all as they did most of the hard work. We had only 5 meetings from January to June 2022, 11 countries working together; UK, Germany, Finland, France, Austria, Denmark, Spain, Luxembourg, Taiwan, Netherlands, Sweden, 10 Suppliers, 2 Contractors and a huge involvement from the UK and German associations. But most of all, what made this a very special document & quite unusual was that it was developed through the collaboration of 2 international associations which are closely connected, FEPA (the Federation of European Producers of Abrasives) and the IACDS (International Association of Concrete Drillers and Sawers). I would also like to thank the secretarial company & staff from IACDS for bringing the members of the committee together, keeping us all under control (or was that my job?) and grabbing the best knowledge and getting to grips with all the different words that our industry calls “our technologies & techniques worldwide”.

Chairing and taking part in this working group was very interesting and rewarding as we had many challenges as we had so many countries all together which causes some language interpretation difficulties into one language of English. We had many specialists from contractors in their trade, from different diamond suppliers to two different professional body association colleagues and with all that knowledge and passion we finally came to an agreement, very early on of which level we wanted to set our educational document and who we should be aiming it for. Once this was set, everyone then took part of the document away and worked on different sections and chapters and others gave technical details and supplied images which was then all given to the IACDS who had the hard job of putting it all together. Then we used the time at our meetings to check, agree and sometime disagree on sections of the document before move forward. In all, with just only a handful of meetings, some language barriers, all members pulled together in the same direction to achieve this great document and a real worldwide subject goal – I feel it was quite an achievement and a real show of common ground and knowledge and an industry pulling together in the same direction!
