Julie White, managing director of D-Drill, on Jack the Ripper and rocking out at Glastonbury

Q: If you could travel back in time to a period of history where would you go?

A: The Second World War. Back then we had true British fighting spirit with everyone pulling together. Right now I think that is what this country needs.

Q: What music do you like?

A: Kasabian and Snow Patrol, but I love any music and have been camped out with my wellies at the Glastonbury Festival year after year.

Q: What unsolved mystery would you like the answers to?

A: Who was Jack the Ripper?

Q: What would you take to a desert island?

A: I would starve to death as I hate fish, so I would take a kite surfing kit so at least I could have some fun. I may even be able to sail myself off, but would probably just get to another deserted island.

Q: What’s your favourite film?

A: Some Like It Hot.

Q: What would your super power de?

A: Super hearing. I would love to know what really goes on and who is making the decisions that affect us and this country. Or be Wonder Woman so I can wear the outfit.

Q: What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

A: Never judge a book by its cover. And one told to me by my father: “It’s free to smile”.

Q: What irritates you?

A: People who cannot see that doing what they have always done is not the only option. If we don’t innovate we are dead.

Q: What should the industry do to help itself in the current climate?

A: We should all take a giant leap of faith and open up and be a lot more transparent with each other, develop trusting relationships which will lead to cost reduction.

Q: What’s the best work-related thing that you’ve done recently?

A: Picking up the World Association Award in Vegas. It’s the equivalent of an Oscar in the diamond drilling and cutting World.
