Julie White sets off for Everest base camp

Julie White, managing director of D-Drill (Master Drillers) Ltd, is walking to the Everest Base Camp and is helping to raise awareness and support for local explorer Mark Wood.

Wood, 44, is aiming to achieve a world first journey by walking solo to the South Pole and then the North Pole back to back.

White signed up to her adventure with another local businesswoman who has been forced to pull out due to unforeseen circumstances.

She said: “My challenge is nothing compared to Mark’s but is still going to be unbelievably tough. It should be a fantastic experience and is one I am very much looking forward to.”

Mark added: “The team will spend 11 days in the Himalayas, living in lodges as they trek through some of the most breathtaking scenery.”

He added: “To prepare for my expedition I have to keep myself in great physical shape. I have trained for over two years in both the UK Mountains and across the Arctic. I will be spending around 120 days alone on the ice – it has taken a great deal of mental training to prepare for that.

“This trip is also about mass communication. The educational schools programme will allow students to view my experiences online.

“I believe it’s important that children understand what is happening on the planet and I can tell them the things that I am seeing live.”
