There has been a great deal of talk of diamonds in the media in the past month but I think the jubilee may have just topped diamond drilling for coverage!
That said, I am doing my level best to enhance the profile of our industry and continue to bang the drum in the national media about the construction sector and business in general.
Also, on a local level, we recently picked up the training award at the Coventry Telegraph Business Awards. It’s great that the efforts of a diamond drilling and concrete sawing company are being recognised because we were up against very stiff competition from all sectors in our category.
Great credit has to go to the whole team here for picking up that award and it is testament to the fact that we continue to invest in our staff from apprentices to managers.
Also, we reached the finalist stage of the training category in the Construction News Awards which is the most prestigious award in the construction industry. For us, this is a massive tribute to the way we approaching training and development here at D-Drill and an honour to be sitting with most of the biggest names in the industry, of which most of them are our customers.
The interview and presentation was extremely nerve-wracking not just for me and Alan, our operations manager, but for one apprentice, Mark Bartlam, and Stuart Gould, a former apprentice who has worked his way through the ranks to a management position, who joined us at the presentation.
They were great on the day and we feel that they got across our passion and belief that the only way to enhance the whole industry is to invest in the people who work in it.
We will find out in July if we have been successful and it really would be a major coup if we went on to win it.
Many might say that, in the current economic climate, that this is not the time to be celebrating at awards ceremonies but I am a big believer that if you do something well, you should shout about it.
We want to encourage more people into business and more people into construction and its many branches, so if we present it as all doom and gloom, we are only going to put people off.
Times are tough – as we are constantly reading and hearing – but that just means it’s even more important to train, invest and deliver the best possible service you can.
And that is certainly worthy of celebration!
