D-drill enables new scanner installation

Skilled operatives from D-Drill have helped a key UK port improve its security operations.

Associated British Ports has installed a new passenger X-ray scanner at its Ocean Terminal in Southampton.

The new scanner has been fitted within the prestigious departure lounge for some of the most luxurious liners and the work was undertaken within the existing surroundings, including carpeting and fixtures and fittings.

In order for it to be installed, D-Drill, working with Vear Construction, had to drill 42 holes of various dimensions and diamond saw-cut nine openings through the existing reinforced concrete floor slab to enable new mechanical and electrical installations

The team managed to complete the works in just one extended day shift in order to comply with the tight scheduled programme.

John Barber, D-Drill branch manager, said: “This is yet another project where our skills and experience were required.

“The drilling and sawing work was, to all intents and purposes, fairly straight forward, however – due to the location and positioning of the works – it was not possible to access a 415v 3 phase power supply which would normally be required for our specialist equipment so, instead, we utilised other tooling from our hub based in the West Midlands.

“The key here was ensuring that there was no damage or mess left within the lounge area because it is fitted out to a very high specification.

“That meant preparation of an effective water/slurry containment system was of paramount importance as the area is in daily use.

“All in all, the job ran extremely smoothly and we are delighted to have played a role in a key development for the port.”

Peter Smith, of Vear Construction, said: “We were very pleased with the service we received from D-Drill. The key to this job was having it completed in a timely fashion and ensuring that there was no mess left behind.

“D-Drill did that and produced the exact result we wanted.”
