D-Drill enable X-ray installation in Newport

Skilled concrete cutting experts have helped a hospital in South Wales install brand new equipment.

Patients at the Royal Gwent Hospital, in Newport, are benefitting from new X-ray equipment thanks to Gary Robinson and Richard Robb, from the Bridgend branch of nationally-acclaimed diamond drilling and concrete sawing company D-Drill after they were called in by Davlan Construction to form a trench in a floor slab as part of the installation.

They were required to create the 6.3m long trench to enable a reinforced concrete ground beam to be put in place for the X-ray equipment as well as form a 2.3m long channel for the electrical tray.

The team used a stitch drilling method and was able to complete the work in just two days, ensuring there was minimal disruption for the hospital.

Gary said: “We were delighted to help install the new X-ray equipment for the patients of the Royal Gwent Hospital.

“We would normally have used a wall saw, however we decided to use the stitch drilling method as there was no 3 phase supply due to the room being decommissioned for the refit and we only had a temporary power supply of 240/110v.

“This proved the best option for the hospital as there was no vibration from the drilling which kept the noise to a minimum.

“We used two Weka DK32 Diamond Drills, two 5kva transformers and a wet vac appliance to clear up the slurry when drilling.

“We stitch drilled the outer edge of the 6.3m trench and then stitched this into smaller blocks for removal from the working area. We also formed a channel into the floor screed for the electrical tray using the same method.”

Gary added: “Creating minimal disruption was of huge importance due to the work taking place at a hospital.

“We completed the job ahead of schedule in just two days by coming in early at around 6.30am and not finishing work until around 5.30pm.

“We were very happy with how the job went and the client was also pleased with our work.”
