Major concrete saw cutting job at Hinckley Point B Nuclear Power Station

Skilled D-Drill operatives have carried out further key drilling and sawing operations at Hinkley Point power station.

Over the course of the past eight years, the company’s Plymouth and Alton offices have worked on several projects at the site.

Work has included drilling into the concrete that will potentially provide the foundations for the new Hinkley Point C to help to test its strength and suitability.

The most recent work involved a major concrete sawing job at Hinkley Point B Nuclear Power Station to help break up a significant area of concrete to make way for a new piece of machinery.

The D-Drill team utilised a special 1.2m diamond saw blade that could cut the one metre high by five metres by four metres so that it could then be broken up into smaller, manageable sections.

In order to carry out the controlled demolition at the power station, the company had to submit very stringent methodology, risk assessment and health & safety procedures in advance.

That pre-planning, as well as the skilled execution, ensured the work was a success.
